Simultaneous Lidar Data and Aerial Imagery Collection with GSM 4000

95West Aerial Mapping revolutionizes simultaneous large-format imagery and high-density lidar collection with a dual GSM 4000 gimbal setup. The US-based company has been performing simultaneous collections for many years. When they decided to upgrade their current equipment, they opted for two SOMAG GSM 4000s as their preferred Gyro Stabilization Mounts for their state-of-the-art sensors. Simultaneous data collection allows the company to serve customers with maximum quality and efficiency.

The Gyro Stabilization Mount 4000 provides industry leading pitch, roll, and yaw stabilization for airborne cameras, scanners, LiDARs and other imaging sensors up to 120 kg during flight missions. Since September 2021, 95West has been operating the dual GSM 4000 Mounts in a Cessna Caravan to stabilize a Vexcel UltraCam Eagle M3 and a Riegl VQ-1560 II-S scanner. The Gyro Mount ensures high quality aerial images taken with the large format camera and a regular distribution of measurement points on the ground for the Lidar scanner, as well as a significant increase in efficiency when flying over large areas by reducing the required overlap of neighboring scan strips.

With small time windows for data acquisition due to weather, sun angle limitations, and seasonal changes, the number of flight hours per season is limited. By acquiring lidar and imagery data in the same flight, weather windows are maximized and mobilization and acquisition costs are halved.

All advantages at a glance:

  • Coincident datasets reflect same features and water levels eliminating discrepancies
  • Single mobilization expense
  • More efficient acquisition
  • Maximum utilization of weather windows
  • Larger image footprints and swath widths
  • Increased detail and precision
  • Data versatility
  • Current terrain data for orthorectification

“We find that many of our clients prefer simultaneous collection. Even customers who would not normally use both lidar and imagery have chosen to acquire both systems because of the greater versatility and benefits.”
– Andrew Werle, 95West Aerial Mapping

Customers from diverse sectors benefit from the dual solution. Engineering and utility customers use the highly accurate terrain models for design while using the high-resolution imagery as a background raster for their drawings. Customers in the mining and commodities industries are able to monitor properties and calculate volumes in a single flight. For orthophotography customers, a much better product can be delivered because the most current surface data can be used for rectification.

Self test

The video shows the self test of the GSM 4000. It consists of a mechanical and an electronic test phase. The self test executes a routine, which checks all sensors, mechanics and electronics and saves the results in a text file. SOMAG can decrypt this text file and utilize it for trouble-shooting purposes. The test can be performed in the SOMAG Mount Control App. which is delivered together with each Gyro Mount on a USB stick.

Nato Exercise

NSM 400 as part of counter-drone system

SOMAG’s NSM 400, a Gyro Stabilization Mount designed to enhance the performance of sensors systems in mobile applications, is part of the counter-drone system Snow Leopard. The system is an evolution of Elettronica’s ADRIAN anti-drone system and was presented in early March on the occasion of NATO’s innovative White Fox exercise and conference held in Sestriere, Italy.

The system is characterized by its capabilities to operate in motion and under extreme operating conditions by using artificial intelligence techniques combined with signal analysis and image processing. Based on the operational requirements and concept of operations, the anti-drone system uses electro-optical devices and RS Scanner/DF as the only detection sensors. The stabilization platform compensates for vehicle movements in the roll and pitch axes in real time and precisely levels the sensor system to enable the identification and classification of drones at a distance. This guarantees an adequate response time.

The NSM 400 can be deployed on any kind of mobile vehicle. For this particular demonstration, the whole system was installed on a BV S7 vehicle of the Italian Army, but can also be installed on any other vehicle to provide protection for dismounted convoys and fixed targets.

SOMAG AG Jena to deliver Gyro Mount to Green Rebel Group

Aerial ecology survey with GSM 4000

Green Rebel Group recently purchased a Gyro Stabilization Mount GSM 4000, the flagship of the SOMAG airborne Gyro Mount line. The Mount was installed in the nose pod of a Diamond DA42 MPP aircraft, which was officially delivered in May 2021. Green Rebel, specializing in data acquisition and analytics to support offshore renewable energy development, acquired the aircraft to conduct aerial ecology surveys off the coast of Ireland. These data will be used to support consent applications for offshore renewable energy developments. As part of this work, large sections of the ocean will be surveyed on a regular basis.

Sarah Kandrot, Head of Aerial Surveys with Green Rebel Group said: “The data are used to map the abundance of marine life to ensure that offshore wind farms are built in the most suitable locations to protect the ecology of the ocean.”

To capture the high-resolution RGB aerial images, the Irish company uses two aerial cameras which are stabilized by the GSM 4000. The Gyro Mount dynamically compensates for arbitrary aircraft movements during survey flights, ensuring razor-sharp images.

In order to have both cameras stabilized by the GSM 4000, a special adapter plate was designed, which features two pods that keep the cameras in an oblique view. and a Flight Management System. In parallel, an AIS receiver records which ships are moving in the vecinity of the aircraft. This is important because only off-shore data is recorded and the ship data can therefore be correlated with the airborne data.

“Thanks to the ultra-high-spec of our camera equipment and the GSM 4000, which ensures blur-free exposures, our aircraft will be flying at heights (1800 ft) that will not cause any disturbance to birds or marine megafauna while at the same time allowing us to collect the highest-quality digital imagery”, Sarah Kandrot added.

Thomas Risch, founder & lead of GALG International said: “We as Global Assistant & Logistic Group actively supported Green Rebel with the design of the equipment and the integration. As system integrator we always strive to keep the system as multi-purpose and scalable as possible. We have therefore chosen the GSM 4000, as it offers us the possibility to add further sensors (LiDAR, HySpex etc.), should this become necessary. In addition, we have many years of experience with the SOMAG devices and therefore know about their high quality.”

“In the run-up to the delivery of a fully equipped survey aircraft, the close interaction of a large number of players in the industry is necessary. We therefore always work closely behind the scenes with our long-term partners to ensure that the customer is satisfied with the final result. To ensure this, we provided fast and unbureaucratic support, whether it was answering (design) technical questions or providing a dummy device to ensure a smooth integration process”, Sören Lieske, Sales Manager of SOMAG AG Jena concluded.

SOMAG AG Jena wins contract

SOMAG to deliver custom OSM 4000 for offshore wind lidar

SOMAG AG Jena has announced that it has won a public tender to supply Centrale Nantes with a stabilization system for their scanning wind LiDAR. Scheduled for summer 2021, the delivery includes a customized Offshore Stabilization Mount which will be used to stabilize a Leosphere Windcube 100s. This 3D wind Doppler LiDAR was acquired by the Research Laboratory in Hydrodynamics, Energy and Atmospheric Environment (LHEEA) of Centrale Nantes as part of its activities on renewable marine energies and the urban atmospheric environment. The optical device is capable to perform a full 3D mapping of the atmosphere to provide enhanced measurements of wind speed and direction in a range of 3 km.

For upcoming research projects, the LiDAR is to be deployed on a floating support at the SEM-REV offshore sea test site, located 20 km off the Atlantic coast near Le Croisic, France. The use of the LiDAR on a floating platform changes its operating conditions significantly compared to the measurements previously performed on land. SOMAG AG Jena will provide a customized OSM 4000 that actively compensates for the movements of a floating platform, which faces waves up to 7 meters high, to keep the chassis of the LiDAR horizontal for an increased measurement accuracy. The motion compensation provided by the gimbal ensures that the aiming position and the measured speed are not affected by the pitch and roll movements of the platform.

The research lab’s selection criteria required a stabilization system capable of operating autonomously and continuously for at least 3 months without intervention in a marine environment with high humidity and salinity.

“Our portfolio of marine mounts is designed for exactly these types of applications,” explains Sebastian Schreiber, CTO of SOMAG AG Jena. “With this project, given the requirements and weight of the payload, we will raise the bar for seaborne stabilization systems as the custom OSM 4000 will be able to level unprecedented 300 kg with a stabilization accuracy of less than 0.1° rms,” adds Schreiber.

In addition to the enhanced performance, the two-axis gimbal will be equipped with an Ethernet port for a permanent remote communication to the device and data exchange with onshore facilities.

SOMAG AG Jena sales manager Sören Lieske comments: We are proud to have been awarded this contract. The project clearly underlines how versatile the applications are for which our devices can add a significant value.”

New GSM 4000 feature

Aux Port interface now available for the GSM 4000

We would like to draw your attention to a technical innovation for one of our devices. The Aux Port interface is now also available for our GSM 4000. All our airborne as well as all marine and land Mounts offer this feature now.

To use the Aux Port the optional software feature “Aux Port” is required. This feature can be ordered directly with a new GSM 4000 or it can be activated after the purchase of the unit. With every delivered Mount we provide the SOMAG Mount Control App. Under the tab Settings (Settings 2) you will find the Aux Port Config panel, necessary settings can be adjusted there. The used IMU can be selected in the combo box and activated via the Apply button.

You have an older Mount and want to upgrade the interface? No problem! Get in touch and we will find a solution together.

The Aux Port offers various advantages:

  •  You have the possibility to connect two devices with your Mount, by using a y-cable. You can link an IMU and a Flight Management System (FMS) at the same time. This can be useful if your current FMS does not pass the IMU data directly to the Mount or if the Mount gimbal data need to be stored in real-time within the IMU.
  • If you do not have an FMS or 3rd party navigation system, you can connect your IMU directly to the Mount via the Aux Port interface. The IMU data improves the stabilization performance of the Mount in terms of leveling and especially heading.
  • An additional advantage of the IMU data coming via the AUX port is that the Mount automatically detects when a curve is entered during flight and switches the drift compensation into “freeze” mode until the curve is finished. This avoids the need to manually switch off the drift before flying a curve and switch it on again manually afterwards.

The following IMUs are currently supported:

  • Applanix POS AVX 210
  • SBG Ellipse, Ekinox and Apogee Series / Model E, N, D, U
  • Novatel OEM719, OEM729, OEM7500, OEM7600, OEM7700, OEM7720, PwrPak7, SPAN CPT7, SMART7-S
  • Advanced Navigation Spatial FOG

The communication between the IMU and the Mount is based on a defined port setting and determined commands which are listed in the SOMAG Mount Control App manual. If you want to use an IMU that is not listed here, just contact us. The integration of further IMUs is possible at any time.
